The essays in this book overwhelming demonstrate the rampant misogyny present in the Abrahamic religions and their pervasive and destructive impact on women and societies. I left Christianity intellectually years ago. But this book is causing my heart to catch up to my head, and it hurts, a lot. To see all of the horrible misogynistic lies I and other women were indoctrinated into, collected together and proved false through a series of factual, cogent arguments is a powerful antidote to the indoctrination of these religions. To think of how many women have accepted, believed, and rationalised these misogynistic bible fables as true and how the lives of women have been and are still being stifled and oppressed by them fills one with both sadness and anger. I would that every woman, young and old, believer and unbeliever, read and study this book in the hopes that it may set them free from religious tyranny and inoculate them against its lies.
Karen Garst is an amazing collector of real facts. Learn about all the Bible stories you have just taken for granted all your life. Learn history of suppression of women. Take back your power. I could not read through. I had to stop to get over my anger over treatment of women in all religions. Stop being ignorant, learn the truth. This book will be gifted to all the young women in my family!
Wow – I think that that this should be required reading for each politician and each religious leader of any faith! The book really has three "beefs" with religion:1) women overall get the short shrift by each one of the three Abrahamic religions at least.2) abuse of children by religion is rampant.3) the whole supernatural being and story has the goal of retaining power for the leaders, and nothing else!So many beliefs and myths are brought out as what they are: tools for securing and retaining power of the men and excuses for abominable activities to both women and children and really anyone else!I wasn't that fond of the final essay because, although it had a good story and wonderful message, my own feeling is that it didn't fit in with the total examination.
If you are female, this volume will detail all the ways monotheistic and other forms of religion of have been employed to invalidate women, their humanity and their choices. And the saddest part is that so many women still buy into this inferior view of themselves and their follow women. Each writer has her own distinctive story and compelling viewpoint on aspects of why and how religion is such a minefield for the female. In today's world where religion continues to have enormous influence upon certain politicians in power, understanding its role in controlling women, is critical information for females and everyone.
I wanted to know what they based their case against faith on. I have read many of these types of books and wanted to see if it was good enough to recommend to others finally questioning religion.
This rips open any eyes that might be tightly shut about the misogyny inherent in any patriarchal religion
