Never been a fan of the Lost Cause writings concerning General Longstreet. Nor a fan of the detractors. Always believed peers went out of their way to cherry pick, misinterpret, and show selective memory when it came to the general and his writings / remarks. This is due in no small part in my opinion to his postwar becoming a Republican and striving to "bind the nation's wounds" as well as being used by many of the men writing about him to disguise their own mistakes and failures during the campaign. Modern scholarships, beginning with Glenn Tucker and a select few other authors provide the general his due in this outstanding work of scholarship. A great read - inclusive of a discussion about Jeb Stuart and the ripple effects of his disregard orders and failure to inform Lee of the whereabouts of the Army of the Potomac to promote his own agenda and "save face" after the debacle of Brandy Station. This is absolutely central to all that follows regarding the campaign and battle of Gettysburg and absolutely bears on the Longstreet controversy. Beyond this, the author presents compelling evidence using the a wide range of sources to present Longstreet in a more positive light then has heretofore been the case. Ironically, citing many authors whose words have been used against Longstreet! Thank you Mr. Pfarr for the outstanding work! The thorough Bibliography allows for followup in the vast body of rhetoric on the subject. I predict this study will be an anathema for the legion of Lost Causers though, in my opinion, it restores Longstreet's justly earned plaudits as well as the luster to the reputation of an outstanding soldier. I've never felt General Lee bore the ill will that is often represented toward Longstreet. If he truly felt Longstreet failed him or was actively working against him, their relationship should be more on the order of Lee / Pickett. From Lee's writings and the writings of those close to Lee, he respected and admired General Longstreet. Wouldn't Lee have regarded Longstreet with similar disdain he held for Pickett if the "Lost Causers" arguments are correct?
I have read the Kindle version and was so impressed I decided to purchase the hard copy a few days later. I found the book to informative, well written and easy to read. Mr. Pfarr's research and tenacity in pursuing sources is impressive as it is evident there were few neutral sources or writings regarding General James Longstreet. I highly recommend "Longstreet at Gettysburg: A Critical Reassessment†for those who are supporters or detractors of Lee's “my old war-horse" for it will cause critical thinking and provide a welcome source of historical materials.
Great Book. Lots of information about General Longstreet and the source of his fight against yhouse who blamed him for the loss at Gettysburg. Can't wait to read it again.
For 156 years, Confederate General James Longstreet has been vilified because of his performance at the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863. Now after years of historians misquoting the words of the frontliners, Cory Pfarr produces a book that take these arguments to task. In a clear manner, Pfarr outlines the acquisitions levied against Lee's "Old War Horse" during the years after the Civil War and General Lee's Death in 1870. Pfarr makes excellent use of primary resources to shed new light on the Longstreet's performance at Gettysburg. Cory Pfarr shows how colleagues of Longstreet blame Longstreet for the loss at Gettysburg. Early historians of the Civil War and the Battle espoused the ideologies of the Lost Cause which held Lee in high esteem; while blaming others for Lee's mistakes. However, contrary to the Lost Cause ideology, many of Longstreet's colleagues show plenty of support for him. It has always been my contention that Longstreet did the best he could with the cards he was dealt. Cory Pfarr sets out to prove this. It is curious to me, as much blame as Longstreet received (he sulked, delayed, he intentionally tried to ruin the battle plan); his assault of on Day 2 almost succeeded. The record shows that the proper support was not afforded to him during his attack. Longstreet lived up to his reputation of being the Confederacy's "hardest hitter". Longstreet put in everything his 1st Corp had to offer. There are reasons, as Pfarr points out, why the assaults on Day 2 and Day 3 did not work out. The aspect of the book I appreciate the most is that Pfarr lets the record speak for itself. He uses amble examples from the primary records to refute the Lost Cause ideology. One aspect I am curious about is that he mentions very little about JEB Stuarts' absence and how that absence effected the outcome of the battle. I highly recommend this book to any historian, Civil War enthusiast, Longstreet lover or enemy. This book goes a long way to "time setting all things right and errors lies but a day--but the truth is eternal." In "Longstreet At Gettysburg: A Critical Reassessment" makes eternity now! But even more so this book is about laying Longstreet's embattled and scapegoated ghost to rest.
