The quality of this massive book on historic military uniforms and traditions is staggering. Its depth and breadth - writing, images, charts, and analysis are extraordinarily impressive. It is clear that there is the passion and work of a lifetime here. This material is a treasure for military historians, costume designers, and at the historical record. It is especially important as much of the source material is fading into the ashes of time. Kudos to Schollander. A magnificent piece of work.
Holding a copy of "The Glory . . ." in my hands, I'm thinking what a daunting read indeed. And yet. A glance at its Table of Contents tells me otherwise. I'm reassured, the author has anticipated our apprehension by taking a scholarly approach to his subject. Each Empire is rendered accessible as it is subjugated to the same investigative format.We begin with the Country Background( a historical analysis). Next, an overview of the Army and its Regimental Organization( very thorough). Which is followed by Uniform Information( the heart of the matter- in great depth). This segues into an examination of the General Staff and Cavalry uniforms. And so on.Happily, the book's structure gives the reader every opportunity to discover and explore each aspect of military dress-uniforms in detail. Not only through the written word but also with a treasure trove of hundreds of historical photographs. Including a mid-section where 24 full page color plates are found. A perfect balancing act between texts and their visual testaments.Turning the last page, I realized where I'd just been. On a visit to a museum. That had led me from open-sleeve ornaments to badges and buttons, tunics to turbans, shakos to kepis, breastplates and helmet plates. It's all there. In exquisite beauty and sumptuous detail.My kudos to the author. A well deserved five-star rating. For his monumental contribution to the history of military dress-uniforms of the "old-order". Anyone curious about the depiction of the armies of the Great War period should have a copy of "The Glory . . . " in their library. Edward Jacobson
A staggering achievement. This book is massive and well worth the price point. It's better suited for general military history than for modelers as there are VERY FEW color plates. I feel that this book could have greatly achieved it's purpose with more illustrations. Color illustrations would have served to make the authors work much easier especially considering the time frame he's covering was rich in beautifully colorful uniforms. Also the period I was mainly interested in ( American Military uniforms ) Is woefully underrepresented a scant 30 pages in a 900 page book.
