In many ways, Bob Holly's book was better than his wrestling career- no offense implied. As he mentions in his book, he never got a real push, was underpaid, and underappreciated for 15 years. It was refreshing to read about the perspective of a jobber to the stars in the WWE who was there for around 3-4 eras.He actually was a good wrestler and performer but was always labeled as a "good hand" and someone who could be relied upon to test new wrestlers, work in tag and opening matches, and be an undercard roleplayer. He guesses it was because of his mic work or HHH buried him.Bob Holly repaired his reputation with this book- beforehand he was considered a bully like JBL, but when he did his podcast book tour he came off as being personable, honest, and just stated his opinions from his point of view.I think some of his opinions are too subjective because the front office never told it to him straight and he was forced to make up explanations for them. I guess they never had the heart to tell him he was never going to be a draw and was going to be a jobber for life to them.

This has to be one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, book on a wrestler's career ever written. Bob's career should be celebrated alongside other greats, as one of the most giving, hardest working, unique, and incredibly tough wrestlers to have ever existed. I was a fan of Bob Holly before reading and thought he always deserved larger breaks and bigger runs for titles. He would have added even more credibility to those titles. He loves pro wrestling and his work in the ring demonstrates his passion. You'll see at the end of the book that he wins his ultimate prize.

When I read a wrestling biography, I want to read it from someone who tells it like it is, not how they think Vince would react (which is why I shy away from most books printed directly through the WWE). This is such a book. I have always liked Hardcore Holly, but never saw him as more then a talented mid card wrestler. This book changed that perception. This is a guy that loves the business, and has been let down by a company he was extremely loyal to. Those that follow wrestling know that those who leave the big time are often bitter and angry, and aren't always reliable because they often paint things in the worst possible light.. What struck me about Bob was that he did have some gripes with many people, but for the most part was able to point out some positive attributes as well as negative ( a prime example being his description of HHH). Don't get me wrong, he told all kinds of juicy stories that give us insight into what our favorite wrestlers were like behind the ring (which i know is one of my main priorities in reading a wrestling bio) but I feel he was more balanced in his approach, which made him more believable. I know I will never look at Bob Holly the same way again.

The Hardcore Truth is the biography of recently-retired wrestler, Bob "Hardcore" Holly.During my decades of wrestling fandom, Bob Holly was always in my periphery, never one of my favorites but always a wrestler I knew would deliver the goods in the ring. After reading this, I wish I would have watched Bob more closely.Unlike a lot of wrestling books, Bob's in the ring by the 10% mark. While I thought his dirt poor upbringing, teenage fatherhood, and fighting in toughman boxing matches in was interesting, I'm glad he focused on what made me want to read the book in the first place.Bob doesn't pull any punches in the book, as befits his hard-hitting style in the ring. He doesn't glamorize his early days in WOW working for Bob Sweetan, nor his short stint as a job guy in WCW. Unlike a lot of guys other than Mick Foley, Bob says Ric was kind of a jerk backstage. From there, Bob went to Smokey Mountain Wrestling for Jim Cornette and wound up dropping out of wrestling for a couple years to be a welder during the week and race cars on the weekends.Bob eventually got the call from the WWF and wound up working there for 15 years. Remember what I said earlier about Bob not pulling punches? Bob calls it like he sees it and covers pretty much every significant WWF/WWE event from those 15 years, like the Clique running things backstage, Jeff Jarrett gettings special treatment because of his father, HHH holding talent down, the deaths of Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit, and much, much more.I can't stress enough how straight ahead Bob is in this book. He talks about drugs, how much people were getting paid, who he liked, who he hated, and what he thought the company did wrong and what they did right. It's a really entertaining read and certainly kept my attention on a snowy Saturday afternoon. There's not a lot more I can say about it without spoiling it. If you're at all interested in professional wrestling, you'll want to read this. For years, I have been touting Pure Dynamite: The Price You Pay for Wrestling Stardom and Terry Funk: More Than Just Hardcore as the wrestling books to buy. Now I'll have to start recommending this one as well.

I had to think long and hard, but I really can't point out a flaw in this book. This book is probably not going to be a classic, but it doesn't claim that.It claims to show the true story of Bob "Hardcore" Holly, and I believe it does that. It doesn't paint him to be superhuman or perfect in any way.I first saw him in a show on MTV called Tough Enough. He clearly knew his stuff and wouldn't accept any nonsense.I had left WWE many years earlier as it seemed to turn stupid, but he brought me back to WWE only to rarely see him in action.I doubt that he could have been as big as Stone Cold or Rock, but he should have been used more and better than he was.I think there should always be room for a no-nonsense, legitimately tough guy in wrestling if only as a foil to the other characters and perhaps more.In my mind, Bob Holly should have been a "jobber to the stars". He could immediately lend credibility to anyone who could hang with him.Anyway, this book will provide a lot of insight into Bob Holly's life and wrestling career, but it's not always a pleasant read; it's the hardcore truth, and the truth can be brutal.
