Mark Dever, the pastor of "Capitol Hill Baptist Church" (Washington D.C.) has written a book that can be very helpful in evaluating the health of one's own church. The title really says it all: 9 Marks of a Healthy Church. Maybe we have never considered whether or not our church is healthy? Perhaps we don't really know what a healthy church really looks like? Maybe we have never been part of a healthy church?Fear not, because Mark Dever, as a faithful pastor lights the way using the Bible as our source book/model. There is nothing in this book that is not backed by by scripture. Dever doesn't just proof-text his way along in this book, but really takes into consideration the context of each passage. I won't list here the chapter titles. You can check Amazon.com for those. I'll just say that Dever does not shy away from difficult topics.The most difficult in my opinion to implement is the chapter of biblical church discipline. Dever pulls no punches here. Our churches need to once again practice biblical church discipline if we are to be really faithful to God and if we want to improve not just numerically, but also in depth as well.I must say I was impressed by reading this book. I really didn't find much I disagreed with. It's a fairly quick read, but at the same time it is not shallow. I would recommend this book to anyone who desires a fuller understanding of what a healthy church looks like.
The question has been raised: "What would happen if Christ were removed from the church?" The author brings up some very important points on what a church should look like. But most important of all, we should seek Jesus Christ involvement as head of the church and centered on Him. Sadly, this book talks all around it but does not directly say we should ask and receive His direction.
Being a pastor actively serving for over a decade I cannot remember a resource with more fundamental rubber meets the road, tested information. I discovered many areas in ministry where improvements are needed. My effectiveness as a pastor has improved by reading this book.
While I don't agree with every aspect of each Mark, I definitely agree that these 9 Marks are indicators of a Healthy Church. This is a book that I believe will be a useful resource now and in the future.
I totally agree with the premise and the nine points of this book. However the presentation and the lack of biblical arguments laid out to make the points is disappointing.
I found this book quite helpful to help me think through the nine marks. While not exhaustive, Dever is thorough in supporting from the scriptures why these areas are essential and provides insights that have helped me to think critically scout these areas in ministry.
I was given this read through a course study, so admittedly I may not have read it had it not been there. However, I have to say - this is good stuff! Dever's simplicity in dealing with some of the common missteps of the Christian Church today are poignant and should be cause for careful consideration. If on the other hand you feel strongly convicted that somehow the model of church must change to meet the times, my guess is that you will find this book like so much sandpaper. Consider it though, because to not consider these things in our church today is to fall far short of the measure with which the scripture alone provides. Thank's Mr Dever! I am sure I will be reading more of your work in the future!
While not the most extensive work on the subjects, it still is helpful for Christians to have a good understanding on all the marks listed in the chapters. This book provides just that. I came away from reading this book with a greater understanding of what the bible says about the church, how it's governed, what is to be the central theme of our lives as a congregational people, the Gospel. I have used this little book for several years as a valid resource, and will continue to do so Lord willing for years to come. Highly recommended for all Christians, and any who are questioning or inquiring about the Christian faith, worldview, or church.
