I bought this book for getting more information about our body bones health, this both for myself and for my wife. Personally, way back in 2004, as the result of some disturbing small pain by the right-side wrist, I then had this point X-rayed and it was discovered that there the bone was empty over 2 inches of the forearm. And then by surgery this was cured by taking marrow from the hip.But for my wife, now during some years, she, like her girlfriends, has yearly been for scanning of the bones, because their doctors tell them that they must do so, but I’ve argued against this, and called it redundant, just as we read here in the book; but normally persons blindly are trusting the doctors. As we read in the book the importance to our bones is determined by how we have lived and continually are living, that is what we eat, doing a bit gymnastic, or parallel working, and so on. Where, in connection to the eating, we read that many of the person’s born during the last arcades are having weaker bones because of the unhealthy western food. But in connection to the measure results for the bones, interestingly we see that the measuring tools, PC program, nut always have been adjusted, synchronized, so that it can happen that the same person will get quite different results from different research places. And furthermore, we read that wrongly we are told that we shall have the same mass in our bones no matter how old we are, and thereby nearly all older persons are having too thin bone. But in the book, we among other also read that when looking around on the earth we then realize that there nearly is no statistically connection between the thinner the bones are the more there will break. As in one case, by one people at one place on earth there are 6 times more broken legs, than by another people, at another place on the earth, even though they at the both places are having equal thin bones.A highly interesting book, with much science information. The book I will bring with me when I, after my wife again have had the bone scan, which she demands because her girlfriends do so, again will be sitting there and again argue with the doctor against taking drugs.
Even though this book was published in 2003, it has opened my eyes to many misconceptions regarding being diagnosed with osteoporosis. My first DEXA scan was in 2006 at age 52, and I already was on the boundary between osteoporosis and osteopenia in my left hip. Every doctor I have seen, including my dentist, has told me not to go on bisphosphonates due to my relatively young age and the unproven safety and side effects of taking these drugs for the rest of my life. The only advice I had received from my gynecologist and endocrinologist over the years was to take in enough calcium. What I have discovered from reading this book is the importance of controlling and improving all the other factors that affect bone health: diet and nutritional factors, exercise, managing stress, and looking at the side effects of medications taken and other health conditions, among others. Sanson points out that a diagnosis of osteoporosis does not mean one will definitely fracture one's bones. Frailty and poor health and nutrition are better indicators of risk. Since reading the book, I have decided not to live in fear but to maximize the factors I have under my control.
I recently had a DEXA bonescan and was diagnosed withosteoporosis (or low bonedensity). My doctor wasvery "dramatic" when she triedto explain the big DANGERthat I was headed toward. Shesaid, "You'll break a hip andend up in a nursing home and youwill die. That's your prognosisif you don't do something aboutthis NOW." She hit her wristvery forcefully and said, "Youcannot do this, because if youdo, your wrist will break andit will not heal." Luckily, Iact from information and notpanic, and this sounded veryone-sided to me. She stronglyrecommended that I takeinjections everyday for one year to buildup bone mass. I am only 48years old and am very healthy, other than thislow bone density condition. (Mylife style has been to eat welland exercise since I was veryyoung. I have never smoked anddrank very little. I amat my proper weight, which hasnever fluctuated more than 10pounds, and manypeople think that I am ten yearsyounger.) Thisbook was God-sent! After readingit, I got blood tested for Vitamin D deficiency.I learned that I had no Vitamin Din my system, which most Americansare in the same boat! (I am rarely out in the sunfor long periods of time, other thandriving.) Therefore I was notabsorbing the calcium from my propernutrition. I got on1,000 mg. of Vitamin D per day, in additionto my usual multi-vitamin supplements, andadded a small portion of healthy fat(butter on toast, or a small sliceof avocado with the tiny Vitamin D pill since itis fat soluable; in other words yourbody will not absorb Vitamin D unlessone eats a little fat along with it...My dietdoes not include much fat, so I make sure toeat a small portion of fat with the Vitamin D.) Withinhours I felt like someone had 'pluggedme into the wall!' I had so much energy, and two weeks later I still feel unusuallyhealthier and with more energy than I everremember. I have to remind myself to goto bed by my usual time, which is 10:30 or 11,because I am so energized! Because of thisbook and others that I have read toresearch the BIG SCARE OF OSTEOPOROSISby the medical "experts" I was ableto zero in on my own particular bodywithout drugs that cause other dangerousside effects, like bone cancer. The FDAhas approved this drug for bone buildingwith the highest level warning on the box.The new bones are not strong, but fragile AND thisdrug caused cancer in laboratory rats. The MYTH about Osteoporosis helped me tobecome familiar with many well-researchedfacts regarding bone mass and the DEXA machines,Bottom line is that NO machine can predict whetheror not one will fall and breaka hip due to bone density! The book is jampacked with information. Thesemachines are all set by their variousmanufacturers and the data thatthey use to compare the individualbeing scanned to other person's bone massdoes not make sense! EVERY WOMAN SHOULDREAD THIS INFORMATIVE BOOK!!!TO PREVENTBEING SCARED AND/OR BULLIED BY DOCTORS!
I think it had some good parts in it, but for the most part I think there are other books on osteoporosis that gives better information. She talks too much about a study was done or reviews was done without ever saying where, what or who did them. I bought this book to give to my 60 year old daughter. I am 80 yrs old now and only have a little osteopenia in my hips, which is not causing me any problem, so I have refused to take any medication for it. I feel that anyone my age is going to have a little osteopenia or osteoporosis somewhere. After reading the book, I decided not to give it to her and find a better book with more information, other than what the writer thinks.
