In this short work, Diana Gabaldon gives us her secrets for writing sex scenes that draw readers into a story emotionally. Using several examples, most drawn from her own works, and employing a delightful sense of humor, Gabaldon is able to explain why certain types of sex scenes illuminate characters, carry the plot forward, and leave readers feeling fulfilled, while others leave them either squirming with embarrassment or bored. If you look closely, however, you'll see this book gives you more than simply information about how to write sex scenes. Gabaldon shows you how to draw a person into a scene, any scene, by using such writing techniques as varying the focus of the scene (close-up vs. panoramic), using a touchstone (something familiar to anchor the reader in a scene), and employing the Rule of Three (use three or more of the senses--taste, touch, sight, sound, smell--to give the reader a visceral sensation of being somewhere, again to anchor him or her in the scene). This book is like an advanced writer's course. It shows that writing a good sex scene is about so much more than just sex. And beyond that, it shows how to write a good scene, whether sex is involved or not.
I'll be honest. At this point, I'm such an Outlander fan, I'll probably read whatever Diana writes. Even the slow moving Lord John series (the ebb and flow of those are just...I don't know). Anyway, I finished this in less than a day, and my main takeaway is that there's a lot of info here that can be used for more than just writing sex scenes.I'm in the midst of finishing two books right now, and I'm devouring as much info as I can on writing, and stories. This gave me a lot of great information on helping your readers really feel what's going on with your characters, and perhaps even put themselves in there (we all do that, right? Right.) so they can experience it too. I've started working out how the Rule of 3 can help my stories resonate with my characters, and why some scenes aren't as straightforward as you might think during your first draft.Highly recommend for all aspiring writers (she does put sex scenes she's written in there to show why and how to use her tips, so FYI if you're sensitive to that kind of thing).
Despite her great sense of humor, I could barely get to page fifty. Yes, she stated she felt dialogue during sex was important, but my God...with all the chatter, when did they have time to boogie? To me, the back-and-forth teasing got old, and after about the sixth long-winded example of rehashing the day's events, the female's exhaustion, and sex in a crowd, the books began sounding uneasily like formula romance-writing. I had never noticed it until seeing the scenes removed from the books' "plot", on their own. The characters never seem to grow maturity-wise, and as for the "wild sex," nothing new here that Kathleen Woodiwiss didn't cover forty years ago. I enjoyed Gabaldon's personal observations much more than the tedious examples (and was relieved to find I wasn't the only one distracted by the phallus references floating through James Lee Burke's self-conscious sex scenes.) Over all, a big disappointment. I expected a lot better from her.
...of Diana Gabaldon's writing methods and style laid out in such a matter of fact manner was so much fun for me! Her sense of humor and candid language simplifies the process of writing about sex while at the same time gives the reader ways to create more complex emotional scenes. This is far more than a "how to" book. By reading this I actually gained a deeper understanding of the Outlander characters. Two thumbs up!!
As a writer, it's always nice to get writing advice from an author you admire and respect. This book could be entitled How to Write, but it does focus on the sex scenes. The advice, however, is applicable to any fiction writing, as it reminds the writer to use all the senses, let the reader use their imagination, all excellent advice, no matter what sort of scene you're writing. Written in Ms. Gabaldon's eloquent and sometimes hilarious style, this writing guide is as entertaining as it is informative.
At the recommendation of peers on how to improve my writing, I just finished I Give You My Body and Romancing the Beat. They were both excellent. If you want to understand where you're going wrong, or have room to improve immediately, grab Romancing the Beat. It was so digestible, easy, and humorous. There's even a beat sheet in the back that's close to what I write and create. It taught me where to slow down, build up the anticipation, create tension, and where to release it.I Give You My Body gets into the details of creating intimacy - even in the nastiest of experiences, like rape - and how to really draw it out through action, emotion, and environment. I admit IGYMB made me skip some passages - I just wasn't ready - or built - for some of the scenes in the Nasty Sex chapter. They aren't graphic, but the emotion is really there, and you don't always want to experience those things when you're reading. But it's an amazing reference tool to learn how to use sexual intimacy to build the relationships in your characters. Both combined make for a purchase less than $10, and worth that investment in my humble opinion.
If you're a writer and you've been stuck on those sex scenes then this is the book for you. I have been able to master every scene but the sex scene and Diana Gabaldon masterfully explains the development, the intent and the real method of creating interest of every kind of sex scene. This teaches more about what goes on between the ears than between the sheets and I couldn't be happier because I'm not into writing pornographic scenes but there are points where you need to have a plan for adults reading about adults that doesn't have to be explicit. Expect explicit language even if you don't intend to use it because she does go over a lot of variations of sex scenes. All-in-all I found this book to be a refreshing treatment of the topic and I salute DG in revealing to everyone how to go about writing effective (as in they did the job required of them) sex scenes. I highly recommend this book.
