For whatever reason, I felt the urge to reread my Black Stallion books, including The Black Stallion Mystery. Filled with the usual perils such as Alec almost getting killed by a wild bull in Spain to he and Henry dropped off in the middle of nowhere. Three yearlings sent to America catch the eyes of Henry and Alec and cause them to wonder if their sire was also the Black's dead sire. Their first destination is Spain with Angel Gonzalez as their host who then takes them by plane to desert country and flies off, leaving them behind. After a long journey they, with the Black's help, find their way to their new host and hostess, who turn out to be Abd-al-Rahman and his wife Tabari whom we had met in The Black Stallion Returns. As the story continues, Abd talks Alec into riding on the Black to find his sire, Ziyadah. After many fruitless nights' search, Alec is about to give up but his host talks him into going once more on his own, and that is when Alec sees the horse with a shimmering cloak of orange, blue and red fire. When he finally finds the horse itself, he finds the once-playful Tabari has grown to a woman wanting revenge for the death of her father, ben Ishak, by killing the Black. How tragic when her shot does not kill the Black, but Ziyadah. A book far removed from horse racing, we instead get another glimpse of desert life and an absorbing mystery. While I missed the usual horse races in the Black Stallion books, this was still full of mystery and adventure.
This was one of my favorite books when a kid, and now that I'm thinking of a story aimed for that age range (8-12) as a writer, I thought I'd read it again. Very well written, very enjoyable. The author was quite a wordsmith (without overdoing it), and good at conveying images and emotions. A good story. I like it much better than the movie version.
I am 11 and I LOVE all of the Black Stallion Books! I think all children should read the Black Stallion if not the whole series! Farley is an amazing writer! Sometimes his books are soothing and calm, other times adventurous, there is a historical fiction and a science fiction and they are all amazing or close. This one is one of my favorites, it was definitely exiting, Alec goes to Arabia for the second time when he and Henry think that the Black's shire might be alive. This book is very mysterious and unpredictable. If you like the the Black Stallion series you must not miss this book, but I would probably read The Black Stallion and The Black Stallion Returns first! You should absolutely read this book and series!ðŸ´!
I read the entire Black Stallion series and most of Mr. Farleys other books back in the 1970s. I was greatly sadden by his death in 1989, along with thousands of other fans. The Black Stallion and his other books have never lost their greatness. I was so happy when I found this set of books on kindle and ordered them right away. This is the first book in the set and while reading it I was brought back into Alex and The Blacks life and to my own childhood memories. The story of Alec, The Black and Henry will always stand the tests of time. A boy and his horse survived together after a ship wreck and learning to love each other on a deserted island. Late a retired horse trainer makes it a wonderful trio and they become the greatest racers ever known. To understand their coming future you must keep reading after the page or two about the author. The story continues in an "epilogue." Don't miss it!
A classic from childhood I was happy to reread and share. Also safe to share with a contemporary young reader - unlike some of the books from the first half of the 20th century, there is no blatant outdated racism or sexism which would require explanation. Just a great story.
In a final tribute to The Black Stallion, Walter Farley teamed up with his son to share the early life of The Black, prior to his fateful meeting with Alec Ramsey, at long last. We meet Shetan and his owner and handlers, and we learn about the hard life of the desert that was first shown to us in The Black Stallion Returns. It's fitting that Farley was able to tell this one last tale that gives us a start to finish understanding of The Black Stallion and his journey. We know he was always meant to belong to Alec, and that he was always wild at heart. This story cements that belief. I appreciated how the telling of his removal from Arabia coincides with what was shared with us in the original book. Overall this was a fitting end to the original series.
The story was even more exciting than when I was a young girl! A boy and a magnificent wild stallion, shipwrecked in the middle of a stormy ocean. The adventure never stops! I think any child from 8 to 12 would adore it - grandmothers love it, too!I purchased the Kindle version with Whisper-Sync. This was my first time to try Whisper-Sync and I highly recommend you try it some time. It was a great bargain and I enjoyed switching back and forth between reading quietly and lying down to close my eyes while Frank Muller read the next chapter.
As a girl growing up, I was a huge Black Stallion fan, reading all of Farley's books. I bought this for my 9 year-old grandson, telling him it was a favorite of mine. I re-read it to see if it was as good as I thought it was as a child--& it was! Still a great series for children!
The Black Stallion was such a favorite of mine as a child that I ordered it for my 7 year old grandson. I thought it might be a little advanced for him, but he loved it! If he's anything like me he'll read it again and again. I was a horse loving little girl when I found this book in my school library, and it was like finding a treasure. I grew up to be a horse trainer, and my daughter did too. I don't know if our next generation will make a life with horses, but it is a wonderful horse story that appeals to boys as well as girls.
