Kate DiCamillo is definitely in the top three childrens' authors for me and my wife (my wife's favorite). We're adults who read children's books because we're both literature nerds and my wife is an elementary school teacher. After enjoying Raimie Nightingale so much, I preordered this and got it for my wife the day it came out. She was thrilled!DiCamillo continues her story that she started in Nightingale, this time with a focus on Louisiana Elafonte. Fantastic character development and a tender touch on the things of life make DiCamillo's books stand out from the usual middle fiction. In my mind, she stands with Gary Schmidt and E.L. Kongisburg as my top children's book authors. Louisiana's Way Home is more excellent material from her.(apologies for any misspellings -- I've had the book read aloud to me! My wife is great)
Louisiana is a sweet, sincere, young gal who’s put into a series of challenging situations, and turns out to be very gutsy. She was raised by her Granny after her parents died, but Granny liked to move frequently so poor Louisiana didn’t have a permanent home. For her last move they had stayed two whole years and she had made some good friends, but Granny wakes her unexpectedly in the middle of the night and Louisiana discovers that, once again, they are on the move. It turns out to be a road trip with many unexpected twists and some unsettling surprises. Louisiana shows her pluck as she ends up taking care of her Granny, making some friends, and doing her best to hang onto hope throughout it all. Can she manage to get back to her friends…ever? It’s hard not to chuckle at some of the situations she ends up in. Who knew what could happen when someone steps firmly on the brakes of a car while going really fast, or that a man with a walrus face could turn out to be a really nice person. This story is both humorous and gripping. Louisiana discovers she has a strength she didn’t realize and she sees many facets of human nature, from quirky women who don’t trust young strangers to some humble folks offering ice cream and love.I liked this book and I think 5th and 6th grade girls will find it inspiring and fun. Author Kate DiCamillo has a solid track record with other award-winning books, and she hits the mark again with this one.
I LOVE the way Kate DeCamillo writes. I love the voice she always creates for her main character. She does this again with an adorable, sweet, precious child named Louisiana. You almost immediately fall in love with her. This story is also sweet, adorable and as precious as the little girl. I look for books that almost always beg to be read aloud. This one of those books. Teachers, please read this one to you class! Tell parents about this one that should be read with their children sitting together as a family! I fell in love with Kate's writing when I read Because of Winn-Dixie, and watched her grow and blossom as a writer with Despereaux, Edward Tulane, Raymie Nightengale, and all of the others she has written. I am looking forward to reading this gem in all my presentations this year. Thank you Kate for all of your brilliant work over the years!
Louisiana’s Way Home is an emotional roller-coaster of a story as we journey with Louisiana to find out what “Home†really means. Louisiana is a small girl with a strong, honest voice, and make no mistake, SHE is telling this story. After meeting Louisiana in Raymie Nightingale, I was delighted to learn that Louisiana’s story would be shared as well. Kate DiCamillo is one of those amazing writers who can tell a complete and colorful story without weighing it down with too many words. Her characters speak clearly and beautifully through the pages with the voice that she gives them. I truly laughed out loud, wept tears of both sadness and joy, and hugged the book tightly when I finished reading it, in an attempt to somehow hug Louisiana, and even Kate herself. This book is brilliant and beautiful, and young (and old) readers will enjoy Louisiana’s voice as surely as if we were listening to her sing in a cathedral.
Kate DiCamillo has done it again with Louisiana's Way Home. My 9-year-old and I took turns reading this book aloud, and even our 7-year-old didn't want to miss these nightly readings.This story brought depth of life into our home and true joy!From the 9-year-old: Little adventurous Louisiana traveled all the way from Florida to Georgia, leaving everything behind, and finding out the story she thought she knew was all wrong. Then she met the Allen family and that was the closest thing to a family she ever had.
Very compelling, great writing style. Louisiana really comes to life through tha story telling.My 8 year old read this in 2 days. My 11 year old who only reads comics, read this in 1 day. I sat and read it in 2 hours. It is too compelling to put down.
Kate DiCamillo has a wonderful way with developing characters and incorpoting a great life lesson. My 4th graders loved this read aloud.
Louisiana is a young girl who was abandoned by the person that she thought was her granny and finds a loving family in an unexpected way. This is a great read aloud for a second grader and independent reader in fourth grade and up.
