Review

"At last we have a book-length treatment of the Hippocratic Oath written by an ethicist who knows ancient Greek! Cavanaugh has made a major contribution, reading the text closely, and situating it in the context of Hellenic oath-taking practices, drama, poetry, philosophy, and mythology as well as medical history. The result is a really fresh look that allows the Oath to speak to us clearly in our own times. I recommend it highly to anyone interested in medical ethics or the history of medical ethics." -- Daniel P. Sulmasy, André Hellegers Professor of Biomedical Ethics, Georgetown University "Today it is fashionable in many quarters to dismiss the Hippocratic Oath as an embarrassing anachronism, or to keep the pretense of oath-taking while stripping the oath of its central promises. Cavanaugh shows that these are grave symptoms of a sickness to which the profession of medicine has always been susceptible. This sickness now threatens to reduce physicians to âprovidersâ of âhealth care servicesâ to be used according to the wishes of patients or the state, even if that means doing what physicians for two millennia have sworn never to do. In this comprehensive examination of the Hippocratic Oath and its role in the medical profession, Cavanaugh shows why it is critical that medicine recover the historic promises that makes it possible for those who are sick to entrust themselves to physiciansâ care." -- Farr Curlin, Josiah C Trent Professor of Medical Humanities, Duke University"Cavanaugh's superb book is a cogent and erudite analysis of the Hippocratic Oath. He reminds us how taking any such oath remains a vital ethical foundation upon which our very profession rests. Cavanaugh illustrates how the Hippocratic Oath remains clearly relevant and beneficial. Erudite yet interesting, this informative book is well-written and well-reasoned, and at once scholarly and entertaining!" -- Stephen J. McPhee, Professor of Medicine, Emeritus, University of California, San Francisco

This is an outstanding book about the moral implications for today's medical practitioners of the Hippocratic Oath. The author, T. A. Cavanaugh, notes that the Oath's prohibitions against giving a deadly drug or an abortive agent both violate the fundamental end of medicine to "do no harm." Having neatly dispensed in an endnote with Edelstein's position that the Oath is a Pythagorean document, Cavanaugh locates the heart of the Hippocratic Oath's prohibitions in the power of the physician to do harm. Harming a patient, whether through abortion or euthanasia, is just as much an abuse of physician power is violations of confidentiality--and, in fact, is a greater abuse of power since the physician causes an individual's death in those forms of "treatment." Presupposed is Alasdair MacIntyre's view of medicine as a practice with "goods internal" to that practice, a notion developed in MacIntyre's classic work, After Virtue. If one of the fundamental ends of medicine is to never harm a patient no matter what "utilitarian good" might arise from such harm, then physician who engages in abortion or euthanasia is, de facto, no longer a physician. She is playing some other role by violating the ends/goals at the heart of medicine itself. The book has a helpful translation (along with the Greek text) of the Hippocratic Oath in the Appendix. For years I have been searching for a book that related the issues of abortion and euthanasia to the ends of medicine itself, and that is something Cavanaugh has successfully done in his discussion of the implications of the Oath's moral implications. I highly recommend this book for any college or university library, and for medical, physician assistant, and nursing school libraries, and it is clear enough for an educated person to read at the public library. There are few books I read that I wish I could have written myself, and this book is certainly among them.
