Finally, a book that i have been waiting for, but didnt know I was looking. Mr. Meltzer has given me the book I wish I had when IWas learning to read. I could have been reading about real women, instead of all those fairy princesses that i was reading about.I bought this book for myself and for my just turned 11 years old granddaughter. He keeps it simple and real. I can't wait to read"Heroes for my Son".Even though its recomended for ages 4-8, i consider it pecfect for any age. Lets face it, I love it when I don't have to look any words up.I can't wait to give it to a whole lot of little girls that will learn from it that any one can be a hero! We all have it within us to do greatWonderful things that can change us for the better, no matter where we come from. My mom is my personal hero and she is the most humble,Generous, and selfless woman I know.Thanks Mr. Meltzer but taking me back in time thru such diverse generations.
I bought each of my granddaughters (aged 13 and 11) a copy. I read the book before giving to them and thought it was wonderful. One of my granddaughters remarked that having people no considered "famous" included was the best part. Especially Mr. Meltzer's mother and his wife. I personally think every girl should read it especially those going into preteens.
I loved Brad's first book Heroes for My Son so much I gave all of my sons a copy for their birthdays ( they range in ages from 37 to 30). When this book came out, I had to have it for my daughter and daughters-in-law. It is full of short summaries of the lives of people both male and female, famous and not so famous who showed great character, determination, creativity, and strength in the face of obstacles in their lives. It is a filled with mini- lessons on the importance of the choices we make in our lives and how we each can impact the lives of those around us, or even cause ripples that will affect thousands if we just don't give up and we do what we know is right. A good way for a concerned parent to teach a child one more time that everyone matters, especially whomever you give this book to! Also a terrific gift for a female friend.
I purchased this book to share with my grandaughter's age 4and 6. I wanted them to hear about courageous people in our history to encourage and challenge their precious little hearts to listen to that wise inner voice. I ended up giving the book to a 12 year old girl who is making braided bracelets to earn money for her school clothes this year. I felt she is one of the unnamed courageous ones the author could have written about and she just might find her own story within this book and continue preservering in her struggle of a life of poverty. I will buy another copy to share with my grandaughters.
I love the book, but it arrived with a dirty dust jacket. I took the jacket off and the actual cover is dirty too. It was supposed to be a gift, but it looks like a used book. Also, I thought the heroes would be women, but it's about 2/3 female and 1/3 male. Because of this, I'm not sure if "Heroes for my son" would be the same people/heroes.
Brad Meltzer provides a great list of people and the justification for each as members of his daughter's list of heroes. Always the great writer, he doesn't let you down in this short read.
Age appropriate for reading to 7 yo. Difficult for even a very good reader with large vocabulary at 7.
This is a great book to read aloud to children or for children to read to themselves. Each mini biography uses a positive character trait exhibited by the person in the sketch to encourage and motivate the child to aspire to greatness in service to her community or in striving for a personal goal. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to see what people admirable and worth emulating.
