If you're a space techno geek and want to really understand the problems Challenger faced and the misguided decision to launch that fateful day, this is a book for you.Al McDonald became the most hated man by NASA and Morton Thiokol management in the aftermath of Challenger. McDonald who raised concerns about the Orings for over a year was the first to tell the world what the inner dialog between NASA and its contractor MTI was like the night before the launch. It took unwavering courage and faith but the truth did come out.Afterward, he observed clues that the next significant possibility of an orbiter failure would be due to the sensitive heat tiles almost 14 years before the Columbia disaster. At times the book runs long, is personal, and McDonald appears righteous in his decision making and story telling. Regardless, his concerns proved ignored and unfortunately led to the death of 7 brave souls 30 years ago.
A very technical and detailed book, it might not interest lot of readers but I loved it. I was already familiar with the basics of the story and it is a travesty. The Challenger was never designed to go in freezing weather but there was a lot of political pressure to meet a schedule so the managers over ruled the engineers, Al McDonald in particular, and launched it anyway. Instead of holding the managers responsible, for the disaster that resulted, NASA declared the shuttle (solid rocket boosters) defective and grounded it for almost three years for a redesign . Kind of like taking a tire designed for a maximum of 100 mph and complaining when it falls apart at 160 mph. This faulty thinking brought us the Columbia disaster, somewhat predictably, and of course the people responsible were not held accountable for that either.
This was an excellent book for anyone with an interest in the Challenger disaster. The book gives a very interesting first-hand account from someone that was intimately involved with the decisions about the Challenger launch. It gives enough technical information for a basic understanding of the issues at hand, but certainly is not a technical read. I thought it was quite well-written. As for accuracy, only the people as closely involved in this disaster as Mr. McDonald could make that judgement. Mr. McDonald is certainly very strong in his point of view, and in his criticisms of others involved. I don't propose this as a negative, as this book, after all, is really a memoir of his experiences. All writing contains the bias of the writers, and this is no different. I did, at times, feel that his personal agenda went further than was helpful (he mentions multiple times the amount of uncompensated overtime he worked, his pay, his retirement compensation etc.). I'm not criticizing his point of view, but I don't think it added anything to the book for me. Don't let that stop you from reading it, either. I think everything else in the book far outweighs this small deficiency. I would give it 4.5/5 stars.
I grew up wanting to be an astronaut. Then I realized you have to be smart to do that, so I settled for being a pilot, but I still love space stuff. This book gets pretty technical, but not enough to make it boring. If you're interested to know the dirty details of the challenger accident and subsequent history of NASA and Morton Thiokol, this is an Awesome read! You won't be able to put it down. It flows very well.
"Truth, Lies, and O-Rings" is a fascinating look into the tragic space shuttle Challenger explosion, as seen from the perspective of Allan McDonald, the lead manager for Morton Thiokol (manufacturers of the Solid Rocket Boosters) stationed at NASA in 1986. I should mention that this excellent book was brought to my attention by my Great Uncle (also mentioned briefly in the book) who also worked for Morton Thiokol at the same time as Mr. McDonald. While there have been other attempts to document and even dramatize the events that lead up to the disastrous decision to launch the shuttle at a temperature far below the engineering recommended minimum safe value, this one is the first that gave me the feeling that we were seeing the whole story from someone who was deeply involved before, during, and after. This is told purely from Mr. McDonald's point of view and it is an impressively detailed, yet easy to follow, accounting of what turns out to be case studies on flawed management decision making, responsible corporate employee behavior, and even a bit on ugly political opportunism. The technical aspects are there but the main focus is on the fallout to the space program, Moron Thiokol, the Solid Rocket Booster program, and the senate hearings, all of which Mr. DcDonald played a key roll in and documented in extraordinary detail (we learn that besides being a manager and engineer, he also had some Legal training). An interesting note, this exact failure in the management chain and NASA's vendor bullying were given as examples in a management training class I took in in the mid-1990s. The lessons that really needed to be learned are that all of the management pressure in the world can not change the laws of physics and that it needs to always be unacceptable to take risks with people's lives to stay on a schedule\budget.This is a great book for those entering engineering and management fields, as well as for the space enthusiast. My copy of has already been borrowed by an engineer friend and I am sending another to my nephew, an engineering student who wants to work at NASA.Highly Recommended!CFH
Very long winded and overly detailed. While Mr. McDonald deserves kudos for going against the recommendation to launch the Challenger shuttle, he didn't quite need to discuss coffee breaks, motel stays, autographed astronaut photos and word-for-word commission hearings in this book. I feel like I earned a masters degree in aeronautical engineering after trudging through this 600+ page book. I now know more about solid rocket boosters than I thought possible.
