After suffering from book impotency for a few weeks, I have found my literary Viagra. It pains me to say that I nearly missed reading this book, I didn't think that I could suffer through another college-age-coming-of-age Cinderella story. Thankfully this isn't another Cinderella fairy tale.....it's more like Red Riding Hood meets the Big Bad Wolf. What prompted me to read this were the following lines:"I love you, too. Promise me you'll remember that."I promise.""Good," he says. "Because I"m about to f*** you like I don't."Karissa may be a college-age girl, but her love interest is no boy, Ignazio "Naz" Vitale is all man. But this is not the typical student being taught by the master; Karissa is teaching Vitale a thing or two. Karissa is embracing college life, she has no other option, because home is basically being tethered to her paranoid mother. Naz is a .....well, I don't know what exactly Naz is in the beginning, but whatever he does, he does it well. The two bump into each other the college campus, and then later at a club. It isn't love or sex at first sight, but Karissa probably should have paid closer the old adage about curiosity killing the cat. The two end up in a relationship, but the story isn't just about the romance, the reader gets a feeling that there is something more going on, and there is....but I don't want to give away any spoilers.Naz may be leading Karissa down a dark troubled road, but let's just say that she fueled up, bought new tires, and packed snacks for the ride. This story held my attention from the beginning until the last page, it got better with each page turned. The suspense kept building, and it didn't disappoint at the end. The author, J.M. Darhower, keeps Naz cool and dark, unlike many stories where the bad guy turns into a softie once he meets the female, this isn't that story. Naz doesn't lose his dark side when he meets Karissa, because Naz doesn't act cool and dark, Naz IS cool and dark.Bottom line....this is at the top of my list for my favorite reads in 2014. If you are expecting a sweet HEA, this may not be the book for you.....but if you like a story with a trip on a bumpy and curvy road, doing 95 mph while blindfolded, this might be your book.
Another book where I am torn between liking it and not. I almost put this book down once I finished the prologue and discovered the heroine was an 18-yr old really immature college freshman. That wasn’t what I was expecting (or wanted frankly). However, I admit I was intrigued enough to keep reading and ultimately it pulled me in. Once I made it past the introductions, it was a really interesting plot, it just needed some fine tuning (and for me, an older heroine). Karissa meets Naz at a club when he takes her home after being drugged and wa la – instant attraction to this mysterious rescuer. Magically he seems to appear wherever she is and she can’t help but want him (but doesn’t seem to question his motivations). Despite the familiar feel at this point, their relationship did not feel skeezy, even if Naz’s motives were questionable. I mean, a 36-yr old and a college freshman? Naz had an edge though and a true mystery that drove me to read more. The sex was very intense, amplified by the fact that she was an 18-yr old girl I think. I had a hard time believing her general naïveté coupled with that kind of sexual acceptance. As their relationship developed, while I more than felt their physical connection, it was the emotional side that was missing for me, perhaps because Naz was such an enigma, or because Karissa wasn’t mature or strong enough for what I felt coming. And once the college year concluded, when the revelations finally began and the story steers away from the usual/typical and in to the darker side, that’s when I knew if I kept reading I would be rewarded. Shocked to say the least with where this book took me. Crazy!!! Now that I’m finished, I’m just not sure how I feel – about what happened, about Naz. I am pretty sure I kind of hate him. Yes, he is indeed an a-hole of epic proportions. Will I read book 2? I think so. He is one of those characters that while you may not like him, you can’t help but want to see more. And while Karissa was a character I couldn’t really invest myself in, I am curious to see her development from here though, because Naz has left this very young girl with some huge choices to make.
