I was really hesitant to buy this book - twenty bucks is a lot of money for me. But after reading the reviews, I was convinced that it would be worth the price of admission. I'm a "shade tree" artist and love to "urban sketch" people when I'm out and about. I'm being treated for breast cancer and spend a lot of time in doctor's offices and in the chemo chair - perfect for people sketching.This book is so specific for what I do (and what I was looking for) that I don't regret spending the twenty bucks one little bit. Excellent explanations and examples, I can see myself referring to it until it falls apart. Pete Scully seems to have known exactly what I was looking for, and presented it in a way that I can immediately apply it to my sketching. It's kinda cool to start seeing results right away.Like I said, worth the price of admission.
I have been a fan of Pete Scully's sketches for several years, so I was excited to learn more about his techniques for sketching people. This book is great for someone who is just starting to sketch and also for more experienced sketchers who would like to improve their ability to draw people quickly. The book is divided into many short sections, making it easy to read on the go. I was surprised by just how much information was covered in a book of this size.
Excellent book. Very easy to follow....even for a beginner like me.
The sketching advice given by Scully (the author) is reasonable. But the majority of the drawings included in his book are amateurish at best (I am being polite). They do nothing to inspire the reader--in fact, it's rather hard to believe that Firefly Books allowed the inclusion of drawings of such poor quality. Other Firefly drawing books that I've read--namely, Architecture and Landscape--have significantly better illustrations!
Great reference book. Wish they had art books like this when I was an up and coming artist. Well worth the purchase for any level artist. Need more books of this quality.
Really? I don't know why this book got so many good reviews. The title is misleading. If you really want to learn how to sketch people in 5 minutes or less, you have to learn two basic concepts: GESTURE DRAWING and CONTOUR DRAWING. Everything else is nothing but rendering and for that there are much better books that this one. I was surprised gesture and contour are explored very superficially in this book plus the author's explanations are so boring, by the time he gets to the point you already forgot what he was talking about. The only reason I'm giving it two stars is because of the amount of examples he included from him and occasionally from other artists. But showing you "How I did it" doesn't necessarily mean I'm teaching you "How to do it". Here are some books that will do more for your drawing skills. If you are a beginner, I suggest you read them in the order I post them. If you can afford only one get the last one and whenever you can get the other two even if they are second hand. Trust me. Very helpful information and examples
Some good ideas for inspiration, but his drawings are not all that good. Fortunately he includes drawings from other people, which are much better. You don't really need a book for doing this--just go out and do it.
